Overview

We are looking for an experienced SQL Server Performance & Stability Consultant to assess and improve a critical database platform, combining deep technical analysis with a long-term evolution strategy.

The role will focus on identifying the structural causes behind recurring performance degradation, defining a clear improvement roadmap, and ensuring sustainable platform stability through infrastructure, SQL Server, database and application-level analysis.

What will you do?

  • Relate current performance and stability issues to the platform’s long-term evolution strategy.

  • Identify structural limitations of the existing platform and define an improvement roadmap.

  • Perform a comprehensive assessment covering:

    • SQL clusters and high availability configurations.

    • Storage, network and operating system.

    • SQL Server health and instance configuration.

    • Resource utilization, Wait Statistics, blocking and deadlocks.

    • Memory pressure and I/O bottlenecks.

    • Fragmentation and statistics.

    • Database growth, logical architecture, indexes and capacity.

    • Critical queries, Stored Procedures and Jobs.

  • Monitor the platform for 4 to 8 weeks to understand its behaviour over time and identify progressive degradation.

  • Investigate issues such as:

    • Memory leaks.

    • Cache pollution.

    • Parameter sniffing.

    • Temporary object growth.

    • Fragmentation and other cumulative performance issues.

  • Shadow operational activities, including:

    • Hourly platform monitoring.

    • Recovery procedures.

    • Periodic cluster failovers.

    • Incident and alert analysis.

  • Identify risks, constraints, root causes and technically supported hypotheses.

  • Define a remediation plan divided into:

    • Quick Wins – up to 2 weeks.

    • Medium Term – approximately 2 months.

    • Long Term – architectural evolution.

  • Define a roadmap to ensure sustainable platform stability over the next 18 months.

  • Recommend tools, configurations and monitoring improvements to anticipate potential issues more effectively.

  • Deliver knowledge transfer sessions to APS, DBA and Application teams.

What are we looking for?

  • Strong experience assessing and troubleshooting critical SQL Server environments.

  • Deep expertise in SQL Server performance and stability analysis.

  • Strong knowledge of SQL Server clusters and high availability architectures.

  • Experience analysing storage, network and operating system dependencies affecting database performance.

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • Wait Statistics.

    • Blocking and deadlocks.

    • Memory management and memory pressure.

    • I/O bottlenecks.

    • Database fragmentation and statistics.

    • Database growth and capacity planning.

    • Index optimization.

    • Critical queries and Stored Procedures.

  • Experience diagnosing complex and progressive performance degradation across infrastructure, database and application layers.

  • Ability to perform root cause analysis and distinguish between infrastructure, SQL Server and application-related issues.

  • Experience defining technical remediation plans and long-term architectural roadmaps.

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate technical findings into clear, actionable recommendations.

  • Experience working closely with APS, DBA and Application teams and providing technical knowledge transfer.
